ACE real estate deal to close in mid-Dec. in Loveland

According to Timescall.com
"LOVELAND -- Prospective buyers of the Agilent Technologies Inc. campus in Loveland said Monday  (11-21-2011) they hope to close on the deal in mid-December, weeks ahead of a date specified in a contract with the city."
"Cumberland & Western Resources LLC of Bowling Green, Ky., intends to develop the ACE technology manufacturing park at the Agilent site, in conjunction with sponsoring agencies NASA and the Colorado Association for Manufacturing and Technology."
"An early closing on the real estate deal means that the developer and the Aerospace Clean Energy Manufacturing and Innovation Park can buckle down to the job of lining up tenants that will be matched with patents controlled by NASA and other federal laboratories."
"ACE plans call for as many as 80 companies to populate the site at the northeast quadrant of Taft Avenue and Southwest 14th Street, creating up to 7,000 jobs as they work to commercialize the government-held technology patents."

HP is back with a new tablet called the Slate 2

Hewlett Packard announced a new tablet product called the "Slate 2 Tablet PC".

" The HP Slate 2 Tablet PC is ideal for people with jobs that frequently take them away from a traditional desk, yet need to remain productive in a familiar Windows® environment," according to the HP website.

In other words, the HP Slate 2 is still a PC that runs Windows 7 Profession 32-bit operation system, x86 software, the Intel Atom 1.5 GHz processor (Z670), all in the form of a touch screen tablet.

It is priced at $699.00 for a system with 2 GB DDR2 on-board memory,  and up to 64 GB mSATA SSM Storage.

This move will create an entry point into the mobile device market for HP, Intel and Microsoft.

See the specifications here:

http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/pscmisc/vac/us/product_pdfs/Slate2.pdf

The product is only as good as the applications that run Windows 7, which is a limitation. Its competitors are Apple's iPad using the iOS, and other tablets using Android. Its selling price is higher than its competition.  Developers need to re-write software to fully take advantage of smaller touch screen mobile devices, otherwise this is a redesigned netbook PC that uses a touch screen keyboard.

The advantage of this product is it brings Windows to the mobile device market place. It's another chance for HP to recover from its uncertainty, when it killed the HP TouchPad, running the WebOS system. After a dismal product launch, it dropped the TouchPad price from $599.00 to a fire sale price of $99.00 and cancelled the product.
P.S. (11-7-11) I saw the HP TouchPad selling on Amazon.com from $234.00. See: http://www.amazon.com/HP-TouchPad-9-7-Inch-Tablet-Computer/dp/B0055D67HW.

HP has quickly regrouped and released an update of the former Slate 500 PC and hopes the new "Slate 2" will revise its chances in the mobile device market place.

Colorado State Labor Dept. Receives $5 million Technical Skills Training Grant

Department of Labor and Workforce Centers to address labor shortages that prompt employers to recruit H1-B workers

(DENVER) – The Colorado Department of Labor and Employment announced (14-Oct-11) that it has been awarded a $5 Million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to launch a training initiative that will prepare workers for careers in Information Technology, Advanced Manufacturing, and the Professional, Scientific and Technical Services industries (with a focus on Aerospace).

Many Coloradans are lacking the skills to compete in these industries and the problem will only get worse in the years ahead if action isn’t taken now says Department of Labor and Employment Executive Director Ellen Golombek. “Our economic recovery must focus on skills, not just jobs,” she says. “This grant – called Strategies to Advance Colorado’s Highly Skilled Workforce -- is designed to help close Colorado’s growing skills gap.”
Even in an economy with an unemployment rate over 8 percent, employers in high-demand, high-wage occupations are still not able to find workers with the right skills and training to fill their job openings. How bad is the problem? Between January of 2010 and the present, Colorado employers spent more than $19 million in H1-B visa fees to bring in 5,761 foreign workers to fill job openings they couldn’t fill with Colorado workers. These workers have taken jobs as computer programmers, computer software engineers, IT analysts and other occupations requiring technical skills.

Importing workers is no long-term solution to Colorado’s skilled worker shortage. Through this initiative, businesses stand to save nearly $3 million in visa costs and approximately $2.3 million in training costs they would have paid to keep their workforce competitive. The grant’s return-on-investment for business and for Colorado exceeds $6 million for the 4 year grant period of performance.

Strategies to Advance Colorado’s Highly Skilled Workforce will target 797 workers statewide, upgrading their skills in information technology, advanced manufacturing and STEM (Scientific, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) capabilities. Of the individuals selected, 558 will be incumbent workers whose skills need upgrading to ensure they stay employed. The grant will also speed the rehire of 239 long-term unemployed workers. A priority of service will be offered to veterans, minorities and women.

The Department of Labor and Employment and local Workforce Centers aren’t tackling this initiative on their own. Innovative partnerships will make the initiative successful and Workforce Centers will be partnering with educators and trainers, businesses and non-profit industry-based organizations in targeting workers for training that will build a stronger economy and get Coloradans back to work.

Partners in the initiative include:

  • Colorado’s Workforce Development Council;
  • Other state agencies (the Office of Economic Development and International Trade, the Department of Higher Education and the Department of Human Services);
  • Educators (the Colorado Community College System and the University of Denver
  • Women’s College);
  • Business Associations (the Metro Denver Economic Development Council, the Longmont Area Economic Council, the Colorado Association for Manufacturing and Technology, Colorado Photonics Industry Association, the South East Business Partnership, Coolest Women We Know, Colorado Coalition for Gender in InformationTechnology, Colorado CleanTech Industry Association and the Boulder Economic Council) and
  • Employers (Allon Hill, Atlasta Solar Center, Evraz, GPS Source, IBM, Imprimis, Inc.,
  • JGMS, Inc., Leitner Poma, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, RK Mechanical, Trane, Wall Street On Demand and Wren Industries);
“This is very much a collaborative approach,” Golombek says, “and it is a catalyst for creating a solid foundation for the future of technical skill occupations and for workforce development in Colorado.”

GE will employ 355 people in its Aurora, CO PrimeStar Solar plant

Summary Update:
  • GE picks Aurora, Colorado for the site of its PrimeStar Solar production plant.  It beat a New York location which was its closest competition.
  • It will employ 355 people.
  • GE will spend $300 million to retrofit an existing Aurora warehouse into a state-of-the-art manufacturing production plant.
  • The plant will produce enough solar panels to power 800,00 homes a year.
  • Ten states were in the running for the proposed plant.
  • This is a big boost to the solar industry in Colorado.
  • The technology  was developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden and PrimeStar, an Arvada-based company GE bought in April.
  • Work will begin in January.
  • Colorado has a talented workforce which was one of the deciding factors over other states.

The Denver Post reports:
"With a PrimeStar fabrication plant here, you see a really strong cluster of solar companies emerging in Colorado," said Christine Shapard, executive director of the Colorado Cleantech Industry Association.
"GE wouldn't have picked Colorado if we hadn't had the workforce and the talent that they need. That differentiates Colorado from many other states."

Alison Gopnik: What do babies think? -- Can adults learn a lesson?

That's a great question. A study shows that a child's brain tends to focus on the BIG Picture but they have trouble focusing on the details; whereas an adult will focus on the details and not focus on the BIG Picture.  In some ways, babies thinking is as "brilliant as the most brilliant scientist".

Developmental scientist have gathered new information over the last 20 years that supports this surprising conclusion, according to Alison Gopnik at the TED conference.
So, we may be asking the wrong question. The right question is "What do babies think?"

A Moment of Silence for Steve Jobs (1955-2011)

Here is a statement from Apple's website. Remembering Steve Jobs:

"Steve Jobs, 1955-2011."
"Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple."

Would adding a blog to your website help drive traffic to your site?

I am sorry, when I say, "driving traffic" to your website, I don't mean highway traffic, I mean increasing readers. I found that writing helpful tips and Do-it-Yourself articles for websites has improved readership.

+ Today's marketing requires repeat customers, therefore there is a need to have readers return to your website often in search of helpful information. This can lead to increased sales.

+ Social Networking depends on spreading the news, and using Twitter or Email to post links back to your website would be a good thing.

So why are so many websites devoid of blogs? I don't know...but I think they are rooted in the days of print media that was not interactive. In the pre-social media days, the website was an expanded version of a printed brochure. It did not engage user action other than to CALL NOW. There were no wiki or blogs attached to the website, unless it was a large corporation like Amazon, which provided product reviews from both the manufacturer and its readers.

Today, it is possible to create a website, using WordPress, that contains both static pages, blog posts, and reader's comments.
Here is an example of a blog I developed and added to a client's website. It's a home and office organization service.
BEFORE:
http://www.ibcorganize-office-home.com/ (This is the front page).
AFTER:
http://www.ibcorganize-office-home.com/category/blog/ (This is from the inner pages. )
Note: the BEFORE page displayed one idea. The AFTER: displayed many ideas because its a blog.

When a reader uses a Search Engine like Google, Bing, or Yahoo, they have a greater chance of landing on the client's website from any page.

A website is not a book, with a beginning, middle and end. Each page must contain enough information to engage the reader or they will "bounce" off the website, never to return.

It's a thought to remember to increase readership by adding a blog.

If you need help adding content to your website, I available for hire.

Your comments are welcomed : gerald-a-curtis@hotmail.com

Book:Where Good Ideas Come From by Steven Johnson

Where do good ideas come from in the age of Social Media and connected minds?  Steven Johnson presents this topic of how good ideas in the past took many years to mature because they begin as a hunch or half of a idea and needed to join with other ideas to fully overcome the challenges they presented. Innovation often occurred by sharing these ideas at social gatherings, such as coffee houses or wine tasting rooms.  Today's innovation happens faster now that we have the internet to share ideas using Social Media. View an introduction to this topic with this video.

HP TouchPad Returns from the Fire Sale Ashes - "More TouchPads on the Way"

According to Mark Buggell from a post on  the HP "THENEXTBENCH" blog, "Despite announcing an end to manufacturing webOS hardware, we have decided to produce one last run of TouchPads to meet unfulfilled demand. We don’t know exactly when these units will be available or how many we’ll get, and we can’t promise we’ll have enough for everyone. We do know that it will be at least a few weeks before you can purchase.  See more information in the updated FAQs below."

"A limited supply will be coming and it will be a few weeks before they are available," states the blog.

It has been speculated that HP is clearing out its supply of remaining component inventory from its suppliers who have already purchased components for the TouchPad.  Halting production of the product at this point would create a huge disruption in the supply-chain and effect its vendors who have purchased inventory items specific to the HP product assembly requirements. It might be better to phase out the TouchPad by building another batch, using these components rather than writing off the all the components as a total loss.

Here's 4 things you can do with the abandoned $99 TouchPad.

What will happen to those thousands of HP TouchPads now obsolete?

Here's 4 things you can do with the abandoned $99 TouchPad.

Months ago, I predicted the death of the "PC keyboard" with the coming of touch screen tablets across the industry ... little did I know that HP would "throw the baby out with the bath water" and abandon the entire tablet, as well.
(See the story listed below)
http://thejobwatch.blogspot.com/2011/02/hps-touchpad-tablet-vs-radio-shack-trs.html

While there is still time.... Here's what you can do with your now obsolete HP TouchPad.

1. "Hack Your TouchPad to Run Android, Win a Prize" - See Wired.com
http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2011/08/touchpad-android-hack/

2. "HP TouchPad becomes a low-cost Ubuntu tablet" - See Gigaom,com
http://gigaom.com/mobile/hp-touchpad-becomes-a-low-cost-ubuntu-tablet/

3. Find applications for the HP TouchPad on the HP site. (such as Facebook Tablet, Kindle for WebOS, 7digital MP3 Music, Just Type and Web browsing.
http://www.hp.com/united-states/webos/us/en/tablet/touchpad-apps.html

4. Some people are trying to resell the Touchpad for $300.00 on Ebay...but wait because the full supply of unsold Touchpads is not known. Retail stores have sold out initial supplies this weekend, at $99.00 each but that does not rule out more will be coming.

HP 16GB TouchPad selling for $99 at Best Buy - Clearance Price

Hewlet-Packard's Touch decided to discontinue producing it after, Best Buy and others reported it was not  selling well.  In fact, they wanted  HP to take it back.  HP last week decided to get out of the consumer Tablet,  phone and PC market all together.  The tablet and phone was based on the WebOS operating system purchased for $1.2 billion from Palm. Inc. The TouchPad was discontinued 49 days after its product launch.

So what happens to all those unsold units?  Today, Best Buy online announce a clearance sale for $99.00

HP TOUCHPAD CLEARANCE AND RETURN POLICY

Due to HP's decision to discontinue its TouchPad product, Best Buy® will now provide clearance pricing for all TouchPad 16GB and 32GB models (SKUs 2842056, 2842092) regardless of previously advertised prices or promotions.

Best Buy will not accept customer returns or exchanges on clearance-priced TouchPads bought through any Best Buy channel.

Customers purchasing a TouchPad at clearance pricing will have a 1-year manufacturer's warranty, fulfilled directly through HP, not Best Buy.

Customers who purchased the 16GB or 32GB TouchPad after June 19 may come into the store to get either a full refund or a refund of the difference between the price they paid and the clearance price.

Quantities are strictly limited. Limit 1 per customer. Best Buy cannot guarantee availability of inventory at this pricing at any particular Best Buy location or chann

Can a future corporation make a profit by providing clean drinking water to the poorer regions of the earth, where workers make less then $3.00 a day? Business leader, Paul Polak has found a way to do this for pennies a gallon. He presented the plan at the TEDxMileHigh talks in Denver, CO.

Uploaded by TEDxTalks on May 26, 2011
"What is the future of the corporation? Paul Polak's vision will likely transform your view of what's possible through capitalism and may change the way current organizations view their business models. His talk details the tremendous shared value that lies within product and system designs for the bottom 90% of the income pyramid."

"In the spirit of "ideas worth spreading," TED has created TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxMileHigh, where x = independently organized TED event. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x=independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized."

Beam Me Up Scotty Kilmer --- Scanners report my vehicle has stalled.

Stardate: 20XX.07.20. My iPod Phone map says I am on HWY 85 near Littleton, Colorado. My old vehicle continues to stall during stop and go traffic. If I don't reach the Alpha Repair Station soon, my transport vehicle will meet the fate of a Ford Galaxy 500 -- a fallen star.
Finally, I arrive at the nearest Alpha Repair And Tire Station and order a computerized scan of the engine to pin point the problem. I pay a non refundable fee of ($105) for this service. Hearing this, my eyes glaze over as if I am lost in space. I soon snap out of it and return to my senses.
I turn on my iPhone and search the internet. There must be an answer.

On this planet, technology has advanced beyond the Industrial Revolution into the Digital Age. Auto technicians use hand held computer scanners to detect the well being of a car. The automobile has several computer controls and sensors -- but all I see is a "Check Engine Soon Light" on the dashboard panel. Diagnostic Scanning Technology will help. I am waiting to receive a report prepared by an auto repair diagnostic service tech. Here it is... It states I need to clean the vehicle's battery posts, replace the spark plugs and wires, air filter, and clean the fuel injectors ... plus replace all four tires (because this shop sells tires). What is the total price? About $500+. I decline to pay for this because I could do most of the work myself. Plus replacing all four tires is not necessary.

So how can I save money? I could fix it myself. I turn to the internet for expert video advice and find free do-it-yourself videos from ScottyKilmer.com. Scotty, is an Emmy Award winning Car Talk/Expert. He produces a series of videos that are informative and entertaining. His website states:
"Scotty has been fixing cars for the last 43 years. You can access his secrets here. All completely free."

The web site reports that over 6 million visitors have watched his repair videos.

Results:
  • I replaced the spark plugs and cleaned the battery posts with baking soda and water.
  • The air filter was ok. It didn't need to be replaced.
  • I had the fuel injectors cleaned by a service tech who had the equipment.
  • My tires had plenty of tread left to drive around the region.
Overall, the vehicle performance improved dramatically and I saved $400+ by doing it myself.
Now I could return to the mission: To explore new worlds and seek new knowledge from the internet. To boldly go... where no man has gone before.

Journalists and Communicators Learn Digital Media Secrets

Journalists and communicators go back to school and learn the secrets of technology used in story telling in a week long seminar hosted by Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
See the link here:

If you missed it, then there are a series of free tutorials posted on its website covering the various subjects such as (audio, data visualizations, flash, maps, photography, public records, reporting, social media, video, web development, wordpress, and other).

Note: Digital media tools cross many technologies and are used in many related job roles, so you don't have to be a journalist to benefit. Companies are downsizing and expect workers to learn more than one traditional role and expect them to take on larger responsibilities. Here is a video of how a former print journalist became a one woman band. She taught herself print, video, and social media skills to transition from paper journalism into the role of what has become the digital media. It's a lesson on how to embrace technology, master it and stay in the game.
